  Ch-ch-changes...
There have been a few changes taking place. Re: the post right below, I got comments working, after a 2 year break. Who can say I'm not a man who finishes what he has started.
Anyway, a few other things have happened as well. I moved the hosting of the blog to blogspot. I have been doing too many freaky things to my own webserver to consider it stable. I also changed the theme, only because mine was so hacked that Blogger could not make automatic updates to the formatting (comments being a perfect example). I was able to safely move over all my old content, so that makes me happy. And when I'm happy - the people around me are happy. I'm just infectious that way.

Also, I'm going to try and type something in here once in a while. Maybe if I want to rant about something. We'll see how long that will last.

Ta ta for now.

  Comments test 2
Hmm... coments are not working. This seems to be a pattern - everytime I try to change something, it doesn't work. maybe i should just forget about comments. Nobody reads this thing anyway....

  Comments test
I just wanted to see if feedback comments are working yet.

  Scott Peterson Trial Over
Scott Peterson got the death penalty and I'm happy he did. Oh, did I just lose some readers? Anyway, I think the death penalty is a good thing, but unfortunately it is just a joke right now. Mr. Peterson MAY be executed in 20 years or so, and we won't even get to see it. Our current punishments are not a deterrent to crime. No criminal right now is cowering scared that he may get the death penalty or even go to jail. If the punishment is not swift and serious enough, it will not deter crime, plain and simple.

I think we need to go back to public flogging in the town square, like Singapore. We should maybe even re-institute public hangings or beheadings, like France. Man, people back then were scared, which was the whole point.

  Why I hate iPods?
Let me count the ways:
1) They are made by Apple, and I have a very strong dislike for anything made by Apple. (I think that will have to be a seperate topic as to why).
2) They are too damn expensive!!!!
3) They have a very strong DRM scheme that prevents you from doing what you want with YOUR music. (Remember, you paid for it on iTunes?)
4) They do not support many of the popular file formats: ogg, flac, wma.
5) Since everyone can download music now, a little bit of the mystery associated with hunting around the net for mp3's is gone. I've been downloading music from the Internet since 1995. I played it on Winamp (I especially like the release version 1.666), I shared my songs through a college LAN, I ran an FTP site that got hits from 52 countries, I was THE first person on my campus that got busted for hogging bandwidth by the administration who then gave me community service as punishment, since they were so inexperienced in these matters. People out there who know what I'm talking about will probably agree - that meant something. Now you grandma can walk around sporting an iPod, not even aware of the rich history that MP3's have. It makes me sad.

Just to close up, I'd like to mention that I have purchased a hard-drive MP3 player also. I got the RIO Karma, after much searching and researching on the net. I didn't just run into a shiny Apple store downtown and forked over money I got for Hannukah. I found it much cheaper than retail, plus I paid no tax and no shipping. I can listen to almost every file format known to man, I have a longer battery life than the iPod and I do not feel like a sheep. I can also do whatever I want with my music, and transfer other files to the Rio. Now leave me alone, I have an audiobook of The DaVinci Code to finish listening to.

What does your phone number spell?
Back in the day, when we surfed the web with Lynx, the text-based browser, one of my buddies at the PC lab found a site that let you look up interesting words that your phone number makes up. Now, almost 10 years later, I stumbled upon a similar site. Go check it out and call me @ 555-love-joy

Linux on my laptop - The Saga Continues, Part 3
Had a bit of a scare today. I decided, one more time, to go for a full-on Linux install on my laptop, dual-boot with Win2000. Got myself a couple of iso's with Mandrake 9.1 distro, and a copy of Partition Magic 8 and started playing fast and loose with my hard drive. First I ran a scandisk (or checkdisk in Win2k), then a defrag to get all those little files arranged nicely and then i ripped my win2000 install a new one; a nice sizable 5gig chunk of empty space. Not that much, you say? On a 20gig drive, with windows crap taking up 11gigs, believe me - it is a big chunk. Satisfied with the job PMagic did i watched the laptop reboot, and I decided to run another checkdisk, just to be extra sure. you know...to get that warm fuzzy feeling of comfort, knowing everything is alright with the world, or at least with my laptop. A few clicks later, I'm staring at the Windows 2000 Logo when ..... poof! the dreaded BSOD!!!!! WTF?!?! Inaccessible boot device? I'll show you inaccessible! Boot on this, mofo! I'm ready to scream. little veins on my forehead are starting to pop, cold sweat is falling down my a-crack. How can this be? A perfect repartitioning, a perfect reboot. What gives? I run down the hall in our office, dodging my fellow employees, to the room where we store the MSDN goodness. I dig up the Win2000 cdrom, retrace my steps and stuff it into the cdrom drive. I reboot, let it boot into the setup...so far so good.....yes, please setup win2000, yes please repair the existing installation, yes please replace all of those files with funny names. 20 to 30 minutes later, after windows recognized all of its hardware, I'm back at the desktop. My precious precious windows 2000 professional desktop, with my wardriving wallpaper (The node is out there). As a last insult, it actually finally performed that last chedkdisk i asked it to do like an hour ago! but that's OK, i say. I'm back in business. next phase of the project is to actually install the Mandrake distro and get into some heavy- (or light-) duty WiFi hacking. What's ahead of me? Network drivers....wireless drivers.....I'm ready. I'm prepared. I ain't afraid no more, ma. Bring it on.

I'll keep you posted...

  Victory!
The world is safe once again. The terrorist threat that loomed over the American way of life has been neutralized. And even though I, Sam Fisher, go unrewarded or even mentioned, I sleep soundly at night, knowing that I was instrumental at restoring peace. I'm talking of course about Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, which i finally finished. All by myself. With no body's help. All me. And it was fun. This is officially my favorite game of the year. That is, until Half-Life 2 comes out. So I hope. I hate getting all hyped up about a game and then have it suck. I'll give you an example:
I just started playing Angel of Darkness, the new chapter in Tomb Raider games. I have very mixed feelings about this game. I read some previews, I've seen ads on websites, I've seen the movie (of course), and I finally sat down this weekend and tried it. The game looks good. In fact it looks the best out of the other Tomb Raider games. It has very realistic environments, realistic rain and reflections, and the character animation and models are top notch. This is the most detailed Lara Croft outside of Hollywood movies. Also another plus - there are actual options available for display settings. You can change more things than I know what to do with. The same with Audio settings. That is always a bonus in any game. The serious gamer needs control over his settings. I'm also happy for the built in support for my Logitech Game Pad, which the game identified BY NAME in the Options screen. The sounds is also great, courtesy of EAX and SB Live series card.
OK, now for the bad stuff. The player controls SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did I mention that the player controls suck? There is no strafe AT ALL! At least in the previous games you got to strafe when Walking. Here we only have forward and back, and very wonky turning controls. I played for a few hours with the keyboard/mouse and the WADS keys that brought me so much joy while Splinter Cell'ing, and I was ready to scream. I was ready to throw the game away, get my money back (if i actually paid for the game), stomp on it and scream some more. Then I dug up my rumble gamepad, restarted the game, got a happy surprise to see its name in the Control Config, and then I jumped back in.
It got a little better. The Dual Analog stick made my life a little easier, making the character easier to move and turn, but it still wasn't good. I used the same gamepad for The Hulk and I had a very pleasant experience. This was disappointing. This is my major grudge against the Tom Raider series: the control scheme has never changed. Someone needs to tell Eidos (or whoever is in charge now) that the same control scheme from the 90's will not cut anymore. Look at the masterpiece that Splinter Cell is in terms of controls. You NEED to be able to nimbly move Sam in order to stay quiet and be productive. Take some notes Tomb Raider dudes. Even if the game is a console port, it does not mean you get to screw up controls for the PC player. At least throw in Strafing - and let us decide if we want to use it or not.

Some other ports that I enjoyed: GTA III and Vice City, Enter The Matrix, The Hulk, and .... I'm sure there is more. PC gamers don't mind ports, just make then easier to play with the equipment we already own. OK, I'm off the soap-box. I just love computer games and I get very passionate about them. If you are like me and you love computer games, check out this link: Penny Arcade. It is a really funny cartoon strip, with gamers in minds. Enjoy it :)

Besides you, other people have been here.
This is where Flat Line gets to tell you about the murky things that wallow in his mind. It might be computer-related, or maybe some philosophical musings, or maybe just complete gibberish as I let my cats type for me. Let's see where this goes...
